The autonomous soft robot fish developed by MIT researchers largely replicates the movement of a real fish, including its rapid escape maneuver.

The ability of a robot to perfectly replicate the movement of a living creature presents a challenge to the notions of "realness" demonstrated in The Velveteen Rabbit. it shows that physical traits, which finally allowed the rabbit to become a real creature, can be replicated exactly in "unreal, Fake" beings as well, like the robot fish. Thus, similar to the electric sheep in phillip k. dick's novel, the fish demonstrates that physical properties and traits are not enough for a being to be considered 'real.;
